How to Deal with
Motherboard Damage
You are perhaps one of those
persons who do work with his laptop on each and every day. But if I do
ask you to define you a laptop you may get into a huge problem! To be
very precise, a laptop is a simple and compact computer. It is its compactness
which happens to be the chief reason behind all its intricacies and complications.
The same is applicable in the case of the motherboard, which is respect
both design and basic infrastructure has a lot of difference with any
ordinary personal computer. While most normal PCs have a mother board
that has different ports for different other components of the computer
to be attached, a laptop on the other hand, has a mother board that has
a lot of things that are built into it, as opposed to sections where other
parts can be attached. Now you may ask is there any such example? Definitely
there are good examples of this basic characteristic. The best example
that can be given in this respect is that of a sound card, which for most
of the time does come as a separate part for older PCs and has to be attached
to the motherboard of a computer. However it is to noted that both the
sound and video display card is integrated with the motherboard, more
than ever in case of the laptop.
Keeping the presence of attributes in concern, it will not be wrong to
say that the motherboard is perhaps, better to say, and happens to be
the most important part of a laptop after the processor. On the other
hand, due to the presence of these features it is also not easy to repair
laptop motherboard; moreover there is also the presence of intricacies
and in a great number. This brings us to the fact hat at the time of repairing
a motherboard there is indeed the need of extreme care and also caution.
Now, for instance, whenever here is any problem with the motherboard of
the laptop it is not desirable for any person who is novice to take the
risk of repairing it all by himself since if it is not done properly it
can lead to irreparable damage to the entire laptop. Indeed there are
several instances when these types of eternal damages have been done.
In this case, it is better and usually safe to approach a dealer of a
laptop or any proficient professional company for the repair of its motherboard.
There is the presence of excellent technicians who have an expertise or
are fully adept in dealing with laptop motherboard problems and can make
the right diagnosis and carry out repairs. If there is some problem with
the motherboard of your laptop, you will find at least scores of self
employed people who repair laptops and happen to be a much cheaper option.
But before approaching them to repair your motherboard, there is the need
to keep a few things in concern. The most important is to know their experience
in repairing laptop motherboards. Now, since we are a completely professional
company exclusively in this discipline for years people do come to us
but knowing our expertise. However, in this respect, never let the unknown
so called technicians to convince and fool you by saying that they have
repaired many PC motherboards. Reason? Laptops and PCs are different things
all together. In addition, there is a need to ask them whether they have
previously repaired laptops of the make that you have. If they have done
so, they should be aware of the intricacies of the work and can be a safe
bet for laptop motherboard repairs.
There are indeed a number of reasons for the fault of the motherboard
of the laptop. Nevertheless, the number one cause for damaged motherboards
and/or CPUs is nothing but the faulty power supply. Some years agi we
did handle a similar type of incident when the power supply of the home
PC of one of our clients caught on fire. When the power supply went it
took the motherboard and both hard drives with it. When customers bring
in their PC's to get repaired with the "I push the power button and
nothing happens" symptom, it is all too evident what happened. Whether
it was some kind of power surge or an internal fault with that power supply,
it doesn't matter, that PSU is toast. Now you need to figure out if the
damage is limited to the power supply or if it took out other key components
as well.
What are the possible prescriptions then? The first prescription is to
change the power supply. If it one the PC will get power and the fans
will spin, but will the motherboard POST? Now if there is no indication
of it, his responsibility is on you to eliminate other components at the
first instance. In many laptops the re is the provision of two sticks
of memory. If you also have in the same manner removed one stick at a
time and attempt to start again. If there is a failure, reinstall the
one you removed and then remove the next one. If start up still fails
somehow, there is the need to remove both sticks of memory and install
another stick that wasn't in the PC originally. But with the failure of
that also, you shall have to eliminate memory from being the problem.
The next thing that should be done is to reset the CMOS to default settings.
This task can be accomplished by the help of a reset jumper on the motherboard.
Keep it in concern that the jumper should be located at a position which
is very close to the CMOS battery, which is the size of a quarter. If
given a lose attention, you shall find close by it three pins with a jumper
on two of those pins. When it is necessary to reset the CMOS, move the
jumper over one slot. If you have difficulty with this, an alternate method
is to just remove the battery itself for a minimum of one half hour. Please
consult the motherboard's manual for exact instructions. If you don't
have the manual, it can be found online with a little bit of research.
If you don't rely on the web world, start from now, it is indeed a treasure.
Now, if the CMOS reset works, it is indeed a great achievement. The next
step for you is to reset the clocks, with the completion of this act you
shall be in the business again. But if it even though doesn't' work, it
is essential to try disconnecting the hard drive and see if the motherboard
will post. We can say it from our experience that this s along innings,
but here should be the effort. But if you are still not having any luck,
then either the Motherboard or the CPU or both are damaged. Now, to b
very precise, there is surely no such way to determine or reach the conclusion
of which of the two is bad without replacing one of them. The dangers
of this is that if you guess CPU and it was the motherboard, when you
replace the CPU with a new one you WILL most likely damage the new CPU.
Therefore it is wise to replace them both. If you don't, you could end
up spending a lot more money than you originally planned. At several times
it does happen that you or anyone, through the changing of the mother
board and CPU and all the hardware in full operation, consider that the
danger period is over. However, it is not the real case. It is found on
several occasions whenever you try to start Windows, for a number of times,
the operating system will not be in the position to load. What can be
the possible reason after so many struggles? The reason is, due to the
presence of the new motherboard, the operating system will not load. If
you have taken care to replace the old model of the motherboard with the
new one and exact same model, there is a great chance that you will not
face this problem. But of there is the replacement with a brand new model
there are two options.
1. Try doing a repair installation of Windows. You will need the Windows
disk to accomplish this.
2. If the above fails, then you will have to reformat your hard drive
which means wipe everything off the drive and do a clean installation
of Windows.
It is also needed for you to consider about your graphics card. Keep it
in concern that this will determine what programs and games you can use.
Many newer games now require a minimum 128 MB or more. The hard disks
on your computer are the Hard Drive, Floppy or Zip Drives, and CD or DVD
ROMs. Lastly, if you have valuable data on your drive that is not backed
up, you are going to have to start looking at ways to retrieve that data
before you reformat.
